Vijay Vaitheeswaran discusses the currently unsustainable system of energy procurement including the geopolitics of undependable suppliers, the increasing energy security needs of growing economies such as China and India, and the failure to meet the energy needs of the poorest third of the world’s population. He credits the move towards increasing liberalization and a more pragmatic and business minded environmentalism with bringing a greater degree of innovation to the energy sector; one of the least innovative sectors of the economy. He cites Toyota, which produced the hybrid Prius, as one of the most innovative companies but warns that, rather than representing the height of automotive innovation, hybrid cars are simply the first step towards a more flexible, variegated manner of meeting our energy needs.
